The Department of Code Administration, formerly a division of the Engineering Department, is headed by Director Johnny McClanahan. The Director of Code Administration also serves as the Building Official for the City of Columbia.
This department handles the issuance of building permits for new structures, additions, remodels or repairs, carport/garages, storage buildings, mobile homes, signs, swimming pools, change of use or occupancy, temporary structures, as well as plumbing, mechanical and gas permits.
The departments building inspectors conduct inspections of all residential and commercial construction projects within the city limits. A 24-hour notice is required on all inspection requests except the final inspection which requires at least a two (2) business days notice.
The department also addresses code violations on properties within the city limits of Columbia. Contact the office at (931) 560-1540 to report code violations such as overgrown grass, trash/junk and debris, inoperable vehicles, and substandard or dilapidated structures.
