Sewer Maintenance Tips

Here are a few important tips you can follow to help keep the sewer system flowing freely:

Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG)

One of the most important things you can do to keep your sewer pipes clear is to properly dispose of fats, oils, and grease (FOG) by following these easy steps:

CAN IT!  Once cooled, pour leftover fats, oils & grease into a sturdy container, like an empty coffee can or jar.

SCRAPE IT!
Before washing, scrape out fats, oils & grease residuals from pots, pans, and dishes.

TRASH IT!
 Put food scraps and food liquids, like gravy, in the garbage - not the drain!

Things to Avoid:

  • Avoid disposing of coffee grounds, egg shells, and disposable wipes down your sink and toilet drains;

  • Any discharges with scalding temperatures are also potentially harmful to pipes;

Easement Access:

  • If you have a sewer easement on your property, keep it exposed and accessible.

  • Avoid planting trees over your sewer pipes.
