Letters to the Police Department
March 2009
Dear Chief Bishop,
I write this letter to you to express my gratitude to the Columbia Police Department. Specifically, Sgt. Peery, Officer Sharpton, Officer Barnick, and Officer Cox who responded to my home on March 17th, 2009, due to a break-in. They caught the intruder, who was a 16 year old boy, with about $1600.00 worth of electronic equipment that my husband and I purchased for our children. I wish to commend each officer that participated in catching this young boy, who was literally caught in the act while coming out of my window with my belongings. Each one of the officers made a very scary situation much easier to handle and offered needed support at an uneasy time.
I would like to add that both of my children are still extremely frightened by the events of March 17th, but because your department responded quickly and caught the intruder, we have a sense of security knowing that we are protected by the Police Department. There are not words to describe how grateful my family and I are for the officers that responded. I feel it necessary to write this letter so you are aware that those men and woman made a difference with my family. I understand that they protect and serve everyday but for me it has now become personal. Something that I have taken for granted for so long has taken center stage, the safety of my family. By the suggestion of one of these officers, we are having a security system installed next week. I have no doubt that if this happens again and your department is alerted, my family and belongings will be safe.
My family and I are so thankful that we are protected by such a fine department. Again, please forward my words of gratitude to the officer mentioned above. They truly went above and beyond to help my family.
Sincerely,
DS

Chief Bishop,
I just wanted to personally thank you and your impressive officers. Even though I am not a resident of Columbia, I was deeply thankful to meet one of your own, Nicole Fall. She helped with Franklin Police Department's RAD class last Thursday and I was very impressed with her.
This was my first experience working with any Police affiliated program and I was very touched with the way I was treated. I earnestly felt Nicole Fall's concern for my safety and I feel so honored to have been part of a program that she helped make very memorable for me.
Thank you and your officers and I pray for all your safety!
God Bless!

Sgt. Peery,
I have had an opportunity of a lifetime. One that I would not trade my life for as you and your officers pledge to protect and serve. I truly want to express my sincere thanks for allowing me to ride out on Saturday night August 30, 2008. Officer Marc Craig was very knowledgeable in his job and a joy to to with, since I spent the night out I couldn't been in more capable hands. He is Simply the BEST! And the other officers too...
He allowed me to see an officer at work and shared knowledge of what is expected of an officer as well as a citizen at any given time or situation. The ride out also allowed you to apply knowledge gained from the classroom and see it all tied together. The classroom experience also allowed you to see officers from a professional image. The ride out allowed you to see that officer as a person in a professional arena. This comes from weeks of seeing those individuals take pride in their job.
After speaking to other officers that were on patrol that night I think they were somewhat disappointed that we the did not receive a clearer picture of police officers at work however, I beg to differ with them. Again, I am truly thankful for the opportunity and would enjoy the ride out again. I have gain a profound respect for you and your officers and friends of a lifetime. I hope!
Thanks for the classes. I've told others about it and hope that when the next class is available that they too will take advantage of the opportunity that I've had. If not; it will be their loss.
"I do hope to ride out again".

Dear Sir:
On the evening of Wednesday, July 23, an officer came to my home to return my driver license that he had found. I was not even aware that I had lost it a few hours earlier near the Polk Home. I did not even think to ask the officer his name. When I went to the Police Office on Thursday, I was told that Officer Brian Goats was most likely the one who had retrieved my license.
Please share my letter with Officer Goats. I am most grateful for his help.
Yours Truly,
M.S.

Dear Chief Crotzer,
The evening of July 17th, 2008, my wife told me that she had received a ticket for exceeding the posted speed limit on Sunnyside Lane. After confessing that she deserved the ticket, she told me how impressed she had been with the officer's professionalism, courtesy, and genuine concern, not only for her safety, but for the safety of her fellow motorists.
So then, the purpose of this letter is to commend Officer Lenz for his professionalism. As always, it is a great comfort to know that we have such outstanding officers serving and protecting our community.
Sincerely,
D.G.

Dear Chief Crotzer,
On Wednesday morning, Columbia Police Sergeant Terry Peery presented a very informative session on Violence in the Workplace to our staff. He shared information and responded to questions and concerns that we found helpful for dealing with people that have the potential for violent behavior. His presentation increased our awareness of what actions we can take to help avoid the situation from occurring or if violence should occur, how to effectively deal with the situation. As a direct result of his presentation, we are making changes to our officer evacuation plan.
The professionalism he displayed made it easy to see why he is among Columbia's Finest. We thank you and your entire force for your continuing efforts to make Columbia a desirable community in which to live and work.
Sincerely,
RL

Dear Chief Crotzer,
On Saturday, March 2008, I requested the assistance of the Columbia Police Department to help recover my son's truck from a person that did not return it as planned.
At first, I was reluctant to call fearing that I would not receive the response that I should expect; however, my fears were immediately removed by dispatcher Sally Crain. She made me feel very comfortable, and her demeanor showed me that she was there to favorably represent the Columbia Police Department and to help me any way that she could.
To make a long story short, Ms. Crain and Officer Nick Moss and Offcier Bryon Stoker quickly found my son's truck and removed the unlicensed driver and DUI offender off the streets. The Officers patiently waited until the truck could be removed, and to really top it off, my wife received a call after I had left, and she was offered help in transporting me to the scene. Sir, you can never beat the feeling that my wife and I have for this gesture.
Sir, in the past, I have received similar responses from the Columbia Police Department, and I have been remiss by not letting you know about very courteous and helpful officers from your department. Thank you so very much for your leadership and a great Police Department.
Please thank Ms. Crain and Officers Moss and Stoker for a "Job Well Done".
Sincerely
JH

Chief Crotzer,
Our family is very thankful for Officers Shrake and Daugherty's help when we were stranded at the intersection of Hwy. 31 and Bear Creek Pike and my emergency flashers would not work. I was scared for my 3 year old and my 18 month old as it was very busy at 5:00 in the evening and dark too! Your officers are to be commended for their help! Thanks very much for taking care of us.
Thank you for helping our family when we had vehicle trouble at a very busy intersection and thank you for being so kind to my son, he loved the stickers!

Chief Crotzer:
I met Officer "M. Anthony" . . .and was very fortunate to do so. I had accelerated from a stop in a crossover-across the eastbound lanes of James Campbell Bvd-when the rear door of the topper on my pickup truck inadvertently opened. Assorted items in the truck bed-and my 3 dogs-. . were no more. Traffic stopped.
I quickly retreived the spare tire and an air tank from the street; one dog cowered and reloaded, the other two bolted. Officer Anthony either finished-or just had finished-a traffic stop nearby and he immediately assisted. After very briefly talking to me, he left in the direction the two "free" dogs ran. Seconds later he returned and said he'd found them. I then followed him 1/4 mile to where they were and reloaded them.
Everything he did, he did well-and professionally. And it was apparent that he did what he did-because he wanted to (help). He was a very welcome experience. I am very appreciative of what he did-and how he did it.
Sincerely,
B G

Dear Chief Crotzer,
My family and I would like to send out our sincere gratitude to you and the Columbia Police Department for all your hard work in finding our daughter.
We are so happy that she is back home safe. We would also like to give our gratitude to Officer Marc Jett for taking the report and getting Officer Joe Reyes involved.
Officer Reyes was wonderful. He took his personal time to help our family find our daughter. We know that this is not part of the protocol of the Police Department, but he helped us when we were at the end of our rope. When he had to look everywhere, he knew where to look for her. He sat down with us to help think of other places she may have been.
We would also like to thank all of the Columbia Police Department again for helping us bring our family back together again.

Dear Chief,
Yesterday morning during the rush hour traffic I experienced a tire blowout on my car. The very kind dispatcher (I'm sorry I didn't get her name) assured me she would send someone to assist me as she spoke very calming words.
Officers Michael Kash and Cheryl Cassidy responded to the call. They were absolutely great in taking charge of the situation and assured me they would handle the problems and helped me to relax.
Officers Kash and Cassidy put the patrol car on the road in such a way to alert traffic that a disabled car was on the road. Then they made sure my tire was changed. As I drove away they reminded me to make sure I put air in the spare tire before I went far.
If these two officers are typical of the rest of the Columbia's police force then we must have one of the best police departments in the country. The take the motto "To Protect and Serve" to the full degree of the meaning of the words.
Please make this letter a part of their personnel files so everyone can know what fine officers they are.
Sincerely,
CS

Dear Assistant Chief Potts,
My oldest daughter was involved in a one car accident there on Monday morning of Martin Luther King Day, when it was raining. Her 2001 Honda hydroplaned at the trough of I-65 North just beyond that exit. She struck not just the end of the nearest guardrail in the median near the inside lane of I-65 North but also the guardrail on the other side of the median, then bounced across I-65 South and came to rest against the guardrail on the far side of I-65 South. The enclosed pictures show why we are quite lucky that Ashley walked away with nothing more than severely strained neck muscles and bad memories.
According to Ashlee, your Sgt. Donna Fagan was very much a take-charge officer who managed the accident scene well and effectively coordinated the emergency responders and ensured that speeding, oncoming traffic did not cause a secondary accident. I subsequently spoke to Sgt. Fagan and found her to be quite professional and articulate. Kudos to Sgt. Fagan for preventing a bad situation from becoming worse and to Officer Ellis for writing such an easy to understand accident report. In addition, Lt. Denton followed up on some missing personal property, and I appreciated his courtesies, as well.
Again, many thanks to your department's emergency responders for a job well done last January 15th that led to my Ashlee being protected and rescued.
Very truly yours,
GCP

To Whom It May Concern,
Lt. Lyles, my name is Cindy Crowell, Family Support Provider with the Mule Town Family Network. I would like to thank you and your staff for the awesome job that you do here in Maury County and for the informative and interesting presentation given to our staff today by Josh Davis regarding the drugs most in use in our county. The feedback from this morning was phenomenal and we are very glad that he was able to do this.

To Whom It May Concern,
I just wanted to let you know that I admire your community policing programs. I am currently finishing my criminal justice degree and found your site while doing research for a community policing paper. Of all the police departments I looked at your department had it all. You should be very proud. I am sure officers count themselves very lucky to be a part of such an impressive deptment. Keep up the good work.

Dear Chief,
About two weeks ago, two of your officers witnessed a crime against my personal property. While I was relieved to find out how minor the offense was, Officer Jason Lovett was concerned about the situation and displayed the utmost concern for my well-being and protection.
Officer Lovett and Sergeant Hunt Blair, who accompanied him, represented the stellar law enforcement that we should all be proud to have in our city. Many thanks to you and both of these men.
Kindly,
S.S.
