Midstate Classic Cancelled
Posted on 03/12/2020
Important NoticeThe City of Columbia has made the decision to cancel the Midstate Classic Collegiate Softball Tournament on March 17th for the protection of our community and citizens as Tennessee copes with the coronavirus. With more large-scale events being canceled or postponed amid travel restrictions and increasing health warnings, the city is taking cautionary measures to reduce the possibility of further health issues.
“I applaud the coordinated efforts undertaken by our various city agencies, the public health entities and the universities with respect to the upcoming Midstate Classic. Obviously, decisions like this are not taken lightly, but I support the decision to cancel this year and find it to be in the best interest of the student athletes, the spectators and our community as a whole. I look forward to welcoming the Lady Vols and Lady Tigers to Columbia in 2021,” said Mayor Chaz Molder.
The participating teams and coaches are very understanding of the situation and look forward to the Midstate Classic 2021: UT Knoxville Coach Ralph Weekly stated, “We are sorry to hear about the cancellation but we understand. In our line of business these things happen. We look forward to returning to Columbia in 2021.”
“We understand the precautions everyone is taking regarding the coronavirus. We support the City of Columbia in their decision to cancel the game. We hope to come back next year to put on a good game for the community,” said University of Memphis Coach Natalie Poole.
